Check out this disturbing tweet string from the D3 Council Member:
After attending several amazing Juneteenth events throughout the city, I"m heartbroken about the incidents at Lake Merritt. My deepest condolences to all impacted by yesterday's violence. But be clear: NOTHING has been "defunded", so stop w/ conclusions from that false narrative.
That said, my mission is to find out: 1) did OPD know about the multiple planned events at the Lake? 2) what measures were taken to compensate for the 6/15/21 re-opening of the City?
3) were the regular weekend mitigations that have been implemented at the Lake in play on 6/19? 4) If not, why not? 5) If so, were they fortified in anticipation of large, holiday crowds?
Ultimately, this highlights the need for a host of preventative [sic] public safety measures versus reactive ones and strengthens my resolve to find real violence deterants [sic], interventions & solutions.
[This is Steve] What is Fife doing here? Her Gotcha! questions suggest she sees a further opportunity to assault the Oakland Police Department, by suggesting that it was OPD, and not the thugs who actually fired the guns, who were responsible for the Juneteenth violence. The strong implication of her tweet string is that she will use her power to hold hearings or investigations into OPD’s conduct, rather than thanking the cops for responding quickly to the mayhem, as Mayor Libby Schaaf did. Her persecution of OPD, based on nothing at all except Fife’s negativity toward cops, also suggests she’s laying the groundwork for ongoing assaults on the police department. It’s all part of the master plan she’s been working on for years: to discredit OPD in the public’s eye and turn opinion against our hard-working cops.
If you think I’m stretching things, go back and look again at her tweets. She suggests that OPD had foreknowledge of the violence and did nothing to stop it. Or, if they didn’t have foreknowledge, they should have. This, from a lawmaker who’s trying to defund the police! And what in God’s name does she mean by “compensation” for the June 15 re-opening of the city? She wonders if “mitigation” at the Lake was “fortified” for the Juneteenth events, but you know what? If there had been a heavier-than-usual police presence, the first person to complain about it would have been Carroll Fife.
Finally, Fife’s defensive claim that “NOTHING has been defunded” should have been followed by the word “yet.” If she doesn’t vote to defund OPD by the end of June, I’ll eat this post.
Look: when Council Member Fife talks about “my mission,” let there be no mistake about it: Carroll Fife’s mission is to defund, and eventually abolish, the Oakland Police Department, replacing it, possibly, with MACRO. I know it, she knows it, and you know it, too, if you’re being honest.
