I have some very good friends, including here at the Coalition for a Better Oakland, who are prepared to endorse Warren Logan for City Council in District 3. It’s not because they particularly like him, but because he possesses the number one quality they demand in a candidate: his name isn’t Carroll Fife.

Anytime some anarchist nut job anywhere in the U.S. calls for violence for “social justice,” you can count on the Black Bloc in Oakland to act accordingly.

The soon-to-be-recalled D.A.’s first surprise was Eric Swalwell’s announcement that he now supports her recall. The second surprise was the unanimous vote by all thirteen Bay Area police unions to also support the recall. The election isn’t for another 3-1/2 weeks, but it’s looking more and more like a done deal, which leads to the question: What will Price do when we kick her out?

Steven Tavares, whose East Bay Insiders daily newsletter is must-reading for politics, headlined his article “DA Pamela Price: Rep. Eric Swalwell is critical of me because I’m a Black woman.” Not even Chesa Boudin, when he was recalled in San Francisco, resorted to a race card or gender defense. Chesa’s politics were all wrong, but at least he was a gentleman and defended himself on policy grounds.

I had and have nothing but respect and affection for Sgt. Barry Donelan, the former president of the Oakland Police Officers Union, who stepped down a few months ago. Sgt. Donelan was a great help to me, personally, and thus to my readers, in helping us understand the Oakland Police Department and the politics surrounding policing in Oakland.
