Not a word from Pamela Price regarding her historic recall. Four days of silence! She could have been the gracious loser, thanking the voters of Alameda County for electing her in the first place, saying what a privilege it has been to be District Attorney, pledging to help the new D.A. make the transition. But no. Angry, defiant and resentful, Price is holed up someplace, trying to figure out what the hell just happened.

It will come as no surprise to readers that I’m bummed by the outcome of the presidential election. I won’t bother to repeat all the deficiencies of Trump’s character, with which we’re all too familiar. But I will say that I agree with Trump and Republicans on at least one issue: crime. And when I say “crime” I mean not simply the robberies and murders that make headlines, but the everyday assaults on our public safety that make life in Oakland so challenging.

I wish that just once, I could take my early morning walk along Grand Avenue on my way to Trader Joe’s and not have to see the overturned wastebins, strewn trash, broken glass, smashed in bus stop windows and all the other insults to our senses and sensibility, like the massive pile of (presumably human) feces someone had so creatively dumped on top of a public garbage container.
